The Great Italian Wars Campaign

Posted by Matt Schultheis - July 29th, 2017

We’d like to offer to the NJMS members a new campaign, THE GREAT ITALIAN WARS, maybe not the usual game. While the intent is to create tabletop miniatures games, the campaign will be an e-mail game involving diplomacy, intrigue and assassinations.

Set in the era of the Renaissance of Machiavelli, Henry VIII, the Borgia Pope Alexander VI, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, all your favorites are here! A good number of rules are added to Machiavelli to try to put the player in the role of leader of the Country or State. While taking and holding real estate from your neighbors, just about as important is how you and your country are perceived by the rest of the world. The highest Prestige might determine who will win.

Initially we’d like to get input on four questions,

1. Who is interested in playing?

There will be space for 8 major players: FLORENCE, VENICE, MILAN, PAPAL STATES, OTTOMAN TURKS, IMPERIAL (Holy Roman Empire), HUNGARY and of course, FRANCE.

Additionally, if there is demand, we could include 4 additional smaller states, GENOA, SIENNA, SAVOY and FERRARA & MODENA.

To assist in deciding if you’d like to play and which country would interest you, all of the files have already been posted to the NJMS FaceBook Page and may be downloaded now. Please let me know ASAP if you’d like to play and which country.

2. Could you attend a training session that will be scheduled to familiarize the players with the tabletop rules, BIG GUSTAVUS?

Looking to have this scheduled for SEP 9th, the week after Labor Day at my place, starting at 10 AM.

For those who may have played these rules before, this training game will demonstrate the differences in the early period covered by the rules. First thing will be, where did all the muskets go??? This period is still pikes, arquebus, and heavily armored knights. The game will be core armies of Florence vs. Milan, representative of the Italian States armies. The rules are pretty fast moving, and should finish in about 2 hours.

The campaign game materials may be different to what you might be used to, so I’d like to keep some time after the training session for any questions you might have.

This would serve to clarify as much as possible all aspects of the campaign. Also be a good time to start the diplomacy side of the game.

3. To obtain the Machiavelli rules, it will be necessary for the players to first register and join the BOARDGAME GEEKS website. https://boardgamegeek.com/. This doesn’t cost anything, and is a great site that would interest any wargamer. The Rules download https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/99949/ah-machiavelli-rulebook-2nd-ed-1983 also has charts and map included in the ruleset.

John Greer will serve as Game Master, assisted by Rich Kane as tabletop RULES MARSHAL, and assisting in other Game Master tasks.

We’d like to get this started as soon as possible.
